C02 Emissions
Car CO2 Emissions: Check a Vehicle’s CO2 Figure
A car’s official carbon dioxide emissions are measured in grams per kilometre (g/km). This figure can affect company-car Benefit-in-Kind tax, employer National Insurance, first-year Vehicle Excise Duty, capital allowances and the Corporation Tax treatment of business lease rentals.
Use the official Vehicle Certification Agency service below to check the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions of new cars and used cars first registered on or after 1 March 2001.
For a particular registered vehicle, you can also find its official CO₂ figure in section V.7 of the V5C registration certificate.
CO₂ is vitally important when it comes to Fleet Cars as the value has implications in the following areas:
- Corporation Tax
- Income tax (Car Benefit in Kind)
- National Insurance (Employee and Employer)
- Toll Charges (i.e. London Congestion)
- Low and Ultra Low emission Zones (LEZ/ULEZ)
Questions you may ask:
- How much CO₂ does my vehicle produce?
- How can I find the CO₂ for a car I am wanting to Buy?
- Where can I get CO₂ rates for a used car?
How does it work?
The Vehicle Certification Agency is part of the Government and is responsible for detailing fuel and emission rates which determines the VED you should pay.
The HMRC is responsible for BIK purposes and the taxable BIK you pay dependent on your emissions.
